HC Deb 02 October 1924 vol 177 cc312-3
33. Sir W. de FRECE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware of the feeling in the Civil Service regarding the absence of equality of pay; and whether he will consider the appointment of a Committee of Inquiry to inquire provisionally into the principle of such equality of pay?

Mr. SNOWDEN

I presume that the hon. Member in speaking of equality of pay is referring to equality as between men and women. This question was fully considered by the Government in July last, when they decided that the state of the country's finances was such as to make it impossible to justify the enormous increase of expenditure that would be involved, and, in the circumstances, I am not prepared to agree to the appointment of a Committee of Inquiry as suggested.
