HC Deb 17 June 1924 vol 174 cc1938-9
14. Mr. GRAHAM WHITE

asked the Minister of Transport if negotiations are still proceeding with regard to the construction of the Liverpool to Manchester road?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Mr. Gosling)

Yes, Sir.

Mr. WHITE

Having regard to the extraordinary length of the negotiations, may I ask if the hon. Gentleman hopes that they will be concluded successfully at an early date?

Colonel ASHLEY

In regard to this very important road, especially in regard to unemployment, are the negotiations going on on a 50-50 basis, or on what basis?

Mr. BUCHANAN

Can the hon. Gentleman give the House an undertaking that the negotiations will not take as long as the negotiations for the Glasgow-Edinburgh road took before the work was started?

Mr. GOSLING

I cannot give that undertaking. As far as I am concerned they will be speeded up. It depends on other people.

Mr. WHITE

Is this one of the roads the Prime Minister had in mind to which special consideration would be given?

Captain Viscount CURZON

Has any work yet been started on the road?
