HC Deb 17 June 1924 vol 174 cc1940-1
17. Viscount CURZON

asked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been drawn to the widening of Berkeley Street; whether he is aware that during the forenoon of 2nd June a complete block of traffic extended from Berkeley Street to Albert Gate, largely caused by traffic coming out of this street; that with a widened Berkeley Street this block will be much worse; and whether he can take, immediate steps to secure that the proposal to construct a traffic subway under Piccadilly at this point will not be prejudiced by any action taken by public authorities or private undertakings until the practicability of this proposal has been examined by the London traffic authority to be set up under the London Traffic Bill?

Mr. GOSLING

The question of the widening of Berkeley Street has been before my Department on several occasions, and I am aware that congestion of traffic frequently takes place at the junction of Berkeley Street and Piccadilly. I do not think the widening of Berkeley Street will in any way prejudice the due consideration of the proposal for a traffic subway under Piccadilly at that point.

Colonel ASHLEY

When is this widening of Berkeley Street going to take place? Why should it be necessary to wait (ill the rebuilding takes place on the site of Devonshire House? Why cannot it be taken in hand at once?

Mr. GOSLING

If the right hon. and gallant Gentleman will put a question down, I will tell him exactly why.
