HC Deb 22 July 1924 vol 176 cc1107-8
28. Sir ROBERT HAMILTON

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether he is now in a position to make any announcement with regard to whaling licences in Shetland?

Mr. ADAMSON

Looking to the fact that both herring fishery and whaling operations are in progress at the present time, I propose to defer a decision on the application made to me until the close of the present season when the situation will be reviewed in the light of all the information then available. In the meantime I am obtaining weekly statistics which, I may say, indicate considerable increases to date in the catch both of herrings and of whales as compared with last year.

Sir R. HAMILTON

Will the right hon. Gentleman undertake to give an answer next year?

Mr. ADAMSON

I have already promised to give a decision at the close of the present season.

Mr. BECKER

Did the right hon. Gentleman say that a whale was a fish?
