HC Deb 22 July 1924 vol 176 c1115
58. Mr. REMER

asked the Minister of Transport if his attention has been called to the treatment meted out by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway to a party from the New Mills Co-operative Society when visiting the British Empire Exhibition on Whit Friday; if he is aware that this party booked accommodation from New Mills to Wembley; that no accommodation was provided for the party; that it was stranded on New Mills Station from 12.40 a.m. to 2.20 a.m., and eventually 95 per cent. of the party had to stand in the corridors throughout the whole of the journey; and will he make representations to the railway company protesting against such treatment?

Mr. GOSLING

I have been in communication with the railway company with regard to this case. They have explained the matter in detail and have expressed regret that in the exceptional circumstances it was impracticable to provide seating accommodation for the majority of the New Mills party.

Mr. HANNON

Is it not a fact that the railway company did not receive adequate notice of the number of persons who proposed to travel on that occasion?

Mr. REMER

Is it not a fact that the railway company labelled these carriages for the New Mills Co-operative Society and that other people got into the carriages and there was no one but a small boy to turn them out of the carriages?
