HC Deb 22 July 1924 vol 176 c1110
35. Mr. CLARKE

asked the Under-Secretary to the Scottish Board of Health if, in view of the rapid development of the East Lothian coalfield and the growing anxiety among the miners on account of the epidemic of infective jaundice or spirochætosis that has continued for over a year with such serious results, he is in a position to state what are the conclusions arrived at between the three Departmens concerned; and meantime will he consider the advisability of recommending that this disease be included in the schedule for compensation purposes?

Mr. ADAMSON

Investigation is still proceeding into the nature of this disease under the auspices of the Medical Research Council, and I am not yet in a position to make any statement on the subject. As regards the second part of the question, understand that my right hon. Friend, the Secretary of State for the Home Department, in whom is vested responsibility for the administration of the Workmen's Compensation Acts, would not feel justified, on present information regarding the disease, in scheduling it under the Act.

Mr. CLARKE

Would the right hon. Gentleman say when I should be likely to receive an answer to my question, if I put it down again?

Mr. ADAMSON

if my hon. Friend will put it down at a future date, I will try to give him an answer.
