HC Deb 07 July 1924 vol 175 c1770
64. Mr. J. HARRIS

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many cents of a shilling and 5-cent and 10-cent pieces of a shilling, respectively, have up to date been supplied to the Governments of Kenya and Uganda, respectively; whether it is the policy of those Governments to withdraw from circulation the cents and cent-pieces of a florin that were previously current; whether these latter have been domonetised; and, if so, when and how and with what notification to the natives?

Mr. THOMAS

Currency is not supplied by the East African Currency Board to the Governments of Kenya and Uganda, but to the banks, through the currency officer for Kenya and Uganda, who is stationed at Nairobi. The numbers of coins of the categories mentioned which have been shipped to the currency officer up to the 30th of June, 194, are as follow:

1 cent 86,040,000
5 cents 4,704,000
10 cents 6,902,000
The policy of the Currency Board is to withdraw the subsidiary coins of the florin from circulation as opportunity offers, but these coins have not been demonetised. They circulate on the basis of two cents of a shilling to one cent of a florin.

Mr. A. M. SAMUEL

Does this mean that the rupee currency has been entirely withdrawn from these parts of East Africa?
