HC Deb 21 January 1924 vol 169 cc515-6
34. Mr. TREVELYAN THOMSON

asked the Under-Secretary for Labour if he will state the number of applications made for uncovenanted benefit in 1923 and the number refused, showing separately the numbers in each case of single persons?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of LABOUR (Mr. Betterton)

Figures are not available for the calendar year 1923, but during the Fourth Special Period (2nd November, 1922, to 17th October, 1923), the number of applications for uncovenanted benefit was 2,134,233, of which 318,681 were refused. An analysis of the reasons for refusal of benefit has been kept only since 30th April, 1923. Between that date and 17th October, 1923, the number of cases in which uncovenanted benefit was refused to single persons was 26,423.
