HC Deb 14 February 1924 vol 169 c1006
56. Mr. W. WATSON

asked the Prime Minister if his attention has been called to the results of the recent poll under the Temperance (Scotland) Act.; and if, seeing that the progress towards temperance cannot be achieved by this Act, he will consider the appointment of a commission to inquire into its operation with a view to amendment, and report to the House before any steps are taken to apply a similar Measure to other parts of. Great Britain?

Mr. CLYNES

I am aware of the general effect of the results of the recent polls under the Temperance (Scotland) Act. A complete return has been obtained by the Scottish Office and it is proposed to present it shortly to the House. My right hon. Friend the Secretary for Scotland is considering a number of points which have been raised in relation to the Scottish Act. I am not in a position to say at present whether any committee will be appointed to inquire into its operation.
