HC Deb 08 March 1923 vol 161 c727
Mr. MOREL

(by Private Notice) asked the Prime Minister if he has any information as to the alleged rejection of the Lausanne Draft Treaty by the Angora Government; and whether, if such rejection has taken place, he will cause papers concerning the Conference, and containing the correspondence between Greek Ministers and British Ministers exchanged last year, to be laid on the Table of the House.

The PRIME MINISTER

According to telegrams received from His Majesty's High Commissioner at Constantinople, it appears that, although the Angora authorities have officially stated that the Draft Treaty presented at Lausanne is considered unacceptable on account of certain of its stipulations, authority has been given to the Turkish Government by a great majority of the Turkish National Assembly to continue peace negotiations. The second part of the question does not therefore, arise.

Captain BENN

Will the situation cause a delay in the publication of the Lausanne papers which have already been laid on the Table of the House?

The PRIME MINISTER

No, I think not.

Mr. MOREL

Should, unfortunately, a rejection of the Draft Treaty take place, in view of the serious position which will then be created, will this House have an opportunity of discussing the matter?

The PRIME MINISTER

I think it would be better to await that contingency.
