HC Deb 26 July 1923 vol 167 cc703-4
48. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Prime Minister whether the peace terms with Turkey include a settlement of the frontiers of Iraq; and what steps are being taken to settle these frontiers?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

Article 3 (2) of the Treaty with Turkey lays down that the frontier between Turkey and Iraq is to be determined by a friendly arrangement between Turkey and Great Britain within nine months. This period will begin to run after the evacuation of Con- stantinople is complete, that is to say at the end of six weeks after ratification of the Treaty by Turkey. Failing agreement between the two Governments, the decision will rest with the League of Nations. Both Governments agree reciprocally that until this decision has been reached, no military or other movement shall be undertaken of a character to modify the "status quo."

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

When is it intended to bring the Treaty before the House? May I respectfully ask the question?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

My answer is that I cannot tell the hon. and gallant Member.

Mr. MOSLEY

Is it decided that we shall accept the decision of the League?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

Oh, yes, I think I have said that in my answer.
