asked the Home Secretary what powers, if any, are possessed by the police in the regulation of London traffic?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

It is impossible to give this information in the compass of a Parliamentary answer. I may say, how- ever, that the powers of the police in relation to the regulation of traffic are derived from various Acts of Parliament, the principal of which are

• The Highway Act, 1835;
• The Metropolitan Police Act, 1839;
• The Metropolitan Streets Act, 1867;
• The Motor Car Act, 1903.
