HC Deb 01 August 1923 vol 167 c1468
61. Mr. HAYES

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that the Liverpool abattoirs are in such a condition as to be unfit for human food to be prepared therein; and will he urge upon the Liverpool Corporation the desirability, in the interests of public health, of putting in hand immediately the building of the new abattoirs for which a site was acquired several years ago?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I am advised that the existing public abattoir at Liverpool is antiquated and does not conform to modern sanitary standards. As regards the second part of the question, I understand that the corporation have decided to proceed with the construction of a new abattoir.

Mr. HAYES

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the conditions in these abattoirs are such that animals which are awaiting slaughter are in view of the carcases of those which have been already destroyed? Is it not a question whether there is not an infringement of the Protection of Animals Act? I hope the right hon. Gentleman will make representations to the corporation.
