HC Deb 01 August 1923 vol 167 cc1449-50
25. Mr. CLARRY

asked the Minister of Labour if any agreement was made by his Department with the local branches of certain trade unions in Newport (Mon.) regarding the use of the Newport (Mon.) Employment Exchange for the purpose of holding meetings, at a nominal cost to cover expenses?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of LABOUR (Mr. Betterton)

Agreements have been made with 15 trade unions and branches for the use of accommodation for meetings at the Newport Employment Exchange. A month's notice was given on the 10th July of certain increased charges, as to which I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given to a question asked by the hon. Member for West Nottingham (Mr. Hayday) on the 18th July.

Mr. CLARRY

Can the hon. Gentleman tell us the reason for the increased charges, and for the agreements being consequently broken?

Mr. BETTERTON

The answer to that is given fully in the answer to which I have referred my hon. Friend.
