Captain MARTINasked the President of the Board of Education whether he is aware that the Board have refused to make any grant towards the expenditure incurred by the Barking Education Authority in paying compensation to Mr. J. T. Edwards, under the rules of the Treasury, on the abolition of his office as secretary to the Education Committee; and, if so, whether he can say why this grant has been refused?
Mr. WOODMr. Edwards at the date of his retirement was in his 70th year, and it appeared to the Board that the real effect of the authority's action was to award him a pension on retirement by reason of old age. As he was unpensionable, the Board did not feel justified in recognising the expenditure as expenditure in aid of which Parliamentary grants should be made to the authority.
