HC Deb 17 April 1923 vol 162 cc1840-1
33. Mr. D. G. SOMERVILLE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War the cost, during each of the last six weeks, of the British Army in Germany and Constantinople and how this charge will be provided for in the Estimates in each case, seeing that no money is forthcoming either from Germany or Turkey to pay for it?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for WAR (Lieut.-Colonel Guinness)

The current weekly costs are: Troops in Germany, £34,000, exclusive of accommodation and other services provided free by the Germans. Troops in Turkey, £82,000. These figures show the total cost. I regret I have been unable to ascertain the extra cost due to troops being stationed in Germany or Turkey instead of elsewhere. As regards the last part of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to pages 31, 202 and 203 of the Army Estimates. The estimated receipts from Germany are shown on the latter pages.
