asked the President of the Board of Education the number of scholarships to Universities maintained by local education authorities in the year 1921–22, and the cost of maintaining them during that period?

asked the President of the Board of Education which counties and county boroughs did not award scholarships to Universities in the year 1921–22 and which of them did not maintain such scholarships in that year?

asked the President of the Board of Education the number of scholarships to Universities awarded by local education authorities in the year 1921–22 and the total annual expenditure involved in these awards?

Mr. WOOD

The Board do not possess complete information as to the number of scholarships to Universities awarded or maintained by local education authorities. The following table gives particulars of the maintenance allowances awarded or paid to students at Universities in 1921–22 under the provisions of the Board's Grant Regulations for maintenance allowances for higher education by 128 local education authorities from which returns have been received:

Of the 128 local education authorities from which returns have been received. 33 did not award any new maintenance allowances to University students in 1921–22, and 27 did not make any maintenance allowances at all to such students.
