HC Deb 12 April 1923 vol 162 cc1295-6
53. Mr. GILBERT

asked the President of the Board of Education whether his Department has taken any action as regards the strike of school teachers at Croydon: whether any steps have been taken in the interests of the children of the district to get the schools reopened; and can he make any statement on the subject?

Mr. WOOD

I am watching the situation closely, but it has not presented an opportunity for useful intervention by the Board. I understand that out of the 78 departments of public elementary schools in the area 26 are open with a sufficient staff, and that the authority are taking steps to appoint teachers and expect to open seven more departments next week.
