HC Deb 12 April 1923 vol 162 cc1285-6
33. Captain WEDGWOOD BENN

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether service in the British Army constitutes proof of naturalisation; and whether, in a case where a soldier dies during service, his widow can claim to be a British subject?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Bridge-man)

Service in the British Army does not confer British nationality upon an alien. The answer to the second part of the question is in the negative if the soldier is an alien.

Captain BENN

Does the right hon. Gentleman think it just to refuse naturalisation to the widow of a man who died in the service of this country?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I should be glad to consider the terms of the case referred to by the hon. and gallant Member.
