HC Deb 26 July 1922 vol 157 cc460-1
61. Mr. GILBERT

asked the hon. Member for the Pollok Division of Glasgow, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, whether any Sunday games are allowed in any of the Royal parks in London and district; if so, what games are allowed and under what Regulations; and, if no games are allowed on Sundays, whether, in view of the recent decision re London County Council parks in London, he will consider as to granting similar game facilities in the Royal parks on Sunday?

Sir J. GILMOUR

The attention of the First Commisioner has been drawn to the recent decision of the London County Council; there is no disposition on the part of the Office of Works to restrict the use of the Royal parks on Sundays except in so far as is necessary to safeguard the enjoyment of the general public and also to prevent destruction of the turf. The substitution of gravel for grass, which would be inevitable if play were continuous, would, in the First Commissioner's opinion, be deplorable. On the other hand, boating has been allowed for many years, and arrangements are being made to throw open the hard tennis courts in Regent's Park on Sundays. If it proves possible to lay out a golf course in Richmond Park, Sunday play will also be permitted.
