HC Deb 24 July 1922 vol 157 cc29-30
82. Mr. W. GRAHAM

asked the Secretary of State for War whether the troops have recently been removed from Edinburgh Castle; whether it is intended in future to have a small garrison there; and, if not, what is the future policy of the War Office in this matter?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for WAR (Lieut.-Colonel Sir R. Sanders)

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative, and to the second part in the affirmative. The third part, therefore, does not arise.

Lieut.-Colonel A. MURRAY

What is the strength of the small garrison that will remain?

Sir R. SANDERS

I think three officers and 126 other ranks of the 2nd battalion Gordon Highlanders, in addition to 13 other ranks and various ancillary services, and a military hospital with 57 beds.

Lieut.-Colonel MURRAY

A detachment of that strength will be there permanently, whether from this regiment or not?

Sir R. SANDERS

"Permanently" is a large word. There is no intention at present to remove that garrison.
