HC Deb 04 July 1922 vol 156 cc194-5
58. Sir W. DAVISON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the site in Bloomsbury at the back of the British Museum which was understood to have been purchased by the Government from the Duke of Bedford, with a view to the same being offered to the University of London, was actually purchased for that purpose or whether the said site was taken over by the Government from the Bedford trustees in liquidation of a debt due from them to the Inland Revenue in respect of heavy outstanding claims for death duties?

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative The necessary moneys for the purpose were voted by Parliament during the financial year 1920–21 and the purchase was completed in March, 1921. The suggestion contained in the last part of the hon. Member's question is entirely without foundation.
