HC Deb 04 July 1922 vol 156 cc200-1

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the estimated revenue and expenditure, respectively, for the current financial year for Nigeria, the Cold Coast, and Kenya Colony?

The original estimate of revenue for the current financial year in the case of Nigeria was £4,724,439. Recently some revision of customs duties has been approved which should bring the revenue up to about £4,870,000. The recurrent expenditure is estimated at £5,321,002, and the special and extraordinary expenditure at £671,855.

For the Gold Coast the revenue is estimated at £2,830,810. the ordinary expenditure at £2,687,232, and the extraordinary expenditure at £389.000. In both Colonies the apparent deficit will be met from the accumulated surpluses of previous years.

The figures of revenue and expenditure for Kenya, according to the original estimates, balanced at £1,952,876. It is now known that the revenue will fall considerably short of the original estimate, but on the other hand steps are being taken to effect a drastic reduction of expenditure. Exact figures are not yet available, but it is intended the revised Budget will balance.
