HC Deb 02 March 1920 vol 126 c235
29. Lieut.-Colonel SPENDER CLAY

asked the Secretary of State for War if the new Army is to be equipped with a sufficiency of automatic rifles as well as machine guns?

Mr. CHURCHILL

It is proposed to equip the whole Army, Regular and Territorial, with both Vickers and Lewis machine guns. We cannot face the expense of the introduction of an automatic rifle at the present time. Experiments will be continued, and better models will be available in a few years.
