HC Deb 17 June 1920 vol 130 cc1428-9
20. Colonel GRETTON

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will state what funds the League of Nations has at its disposal; and in what proportions money for the support of the League has been subscribed by the nations who have joined the League?

Mr. HARMSWORTH

I am informed by the Secretary-General of the League of Nations that by the 15th of June, 1920, the sum of £179,055 had been contributed by the members of the League. I have no information as to the precise amounts contributed by each member, but the proportions in which each contributes to the expenses are laid down in Article 6 of the Covenant.

Colonel GRETTON

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what proportion is borne by our Government?

Mr. HARMSWORTH

I should need notice of that question.

Colonel GRETTON

Does it amount to £40,000?

Mr. HARMSWORTH

That is the Estimate for the coming year.

Lieut.-Colonel WILLIAMS

Will the right hon. Gentleman inquire as to whether there has been any contribution by the American Government? [HON. MEMBERS: "No!"]

Mr. HARMSWORTH

They are not parties to the League.
