HC Deb 14 June 1920 vol 130 c865
22. Mr. GILBERT

asked the Minister of Transport if he will state how many special trains were run by the respective railway companies to Epsom on Derby Day; if they were all run at ordinary fares or if special fares were charged; and, if so, whether these fares were in excess of the ordinary rates?

Sir E. GEDDES

The number of special trains run to Epsom on Derby Day by each of the railway companies concerned was as follows:—

London, Brighton, and South Coast 88 trains
South Eastern and Chatham 108 trains
London and South Western 17 trains
No reduction of ordinary fares was made for these trains; and in the case of many of them the fares charged were in excess of the ordinary rates.

Mr. HOGGE

In view of the fact that these railways can supply extra trains for that purpose, cannot they supply us with extra trains to take us home?

Mr. MYERS

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman if that is part of the campaign of economy?

Sir E. GEDDES

No; it is part of the campaign to try and make the railways meet their expenses.
