HC Deb 23 February 1920 vol 125 cc1301-2
79. Viscount CURZON

asked the First Commissioner of Works to state how many buildings are now occupied in Paris by the Government; what is the total cost; how many buildings have been surrendered; if any compensation has been paid to owners; if so, what is the amount; and by what date will all buildings taken over by the Government in Paris be finally surrendered?

Sir A. MOND

So far as my Department is concerned, there is one small building and portions of three others at present occupied in Paris, involving an expenditure of approximately £1,100 per month; but I understand that there are also buildings in the occupation of sections of the Ministry of Munitions, including the Disposals Board. Eight buildings, including the large hotels such as Majestic and Astoria, have been surrendered and compensation to the extent of approximately £200,000 (inclusive of rent) has been paid to the owners in full settlement of claims. It is impossible at present to state when the remaining buildings can be surrendered, as these are occupied by those responsible for completing the details of the outstanding Peace Treaties and for watching the observance of the obligations under the Treaty with Germany.

Viscount CURZON

Will this come on the Ministry of Munitions Vote or the Office of Works?

Sir A. MOND

I think on the Ministry of Munitions.

Lieut.-Colonel MURRAY

By whom is the first building the right hon. Gentleman mentioned occupied?

Sir A. MOND

That question ought to be addressed to the Foreign Office.

Sir J. BUTCHER

When will the British Museum be given up?
