HC Deb 23 February 1920 vol 125 cc1302-3
Mr. LAMBERT (by Private Notice)

asked the Leader of the House whether in view of the prevailing discontent he will grant an early opportunity for discussion of the action the Government propose to take to check the rise in prices of essential commodities?

Mr. BONAR LAW

The time available before the end of the financial year is very, very limited, and I am afraid it would be very difficult to find time for this discussion.

Mr. LAMBERT

In view of the great feeling outside on this subject, can the right hon. Gentleman not give some opportunity for discussion in the House before the end of the financial year?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I think a discussion would be useful if an opportunity occurred, but time is really a factor which cannot be neglected since before the end of the financial year we must get the finance business done.

Mr. THOMAS

As there could be no more important question, can the right hon. Gentleman not grant facilities for a day for discussion?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I have already said I think a discussion would do good, but I do not see how it is possible in view of the difficulty which I have already pointed out to the Noble Lord. There are private Members' motions and I think it would be a good thing if one of them was utilised for the purpose.

Sir D. MACLEAN

Could it not be done on the Civil Service Vote on Account?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I shall consider whether that is possible.

Sir H. BRITTAIN

Why not a Saturday?

Mr. HURD

Can you not get next Friday appropriated for this purpose?
