HC Deb 10 August 1920 vol 133 cc212-3
2 Mr. MacCALLUM SCOTT

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether, in view of the substantial increase in rents sanctioned by Parliament, ranging from 2s. a week upwards, it is proposed to increase the separation allowances for waves and dependants of soldiers?

Sir A. WILLIAMSON

No, Sir; it is not proposed to increase the allowance as suggested. The joint income of the soldier and his wife is adequate, and the man has every facility for making remittances to supplement the allowance if desired.

Mr. MacCALLUM SCOTT

Was this allowance in excess of what was adequate before the increase of rent took place?

Mr. LAWSON

Before the right hon. Gentleman answers that, may I ask was not this matter submitted to the Treasury some time ago, long before the rents were increased, and when are we going to get an answer to that question?

Sir A. WILLIAMSON

I do not know to what matter the hon. Gentleman refers, but if he will write to me I will be pleased to send him an answer.
