HC Deb 06 November 1919 vol 120 c1676
69. Sir J. AGG-GARDNER

asked the Secretary to the Treasury if he will allow a larger amount of brandy to be released from bond in view of the shortage already existing, and of the fact that during the winter months it is always in demand for medicinal use?

The MINISTER of FOOD (Mr. Roberts)

I have been asked to reply. The question of releasing larger quantities of brandy from bond is now being considered. The hon. Member will understand that the decision in this matter is one for the Cabinet.

Mr. BILLING

Might I put in a word for whisky, too?

Mr. G. TERRELL

When can we have the decision of the Government in this matter? Is he aware that this reply has been given repeatedly, and that the Government never seem to be able to arrive at a decision?

Sir W. PEARCE

Is he aware that there is great hindrance in the Port of London quays and warehouses caused by the large stock of-wines and spirits which the Government are compelling them to hold instead of allowing them to go into-circulation?

Mr. ROBERTS

I am not aware of that fact. The question has been repeatedly put to me, and I regret that I am not in a position to give a different reply.

Sir F. HALL

Perhaps a visit by the right hon. Gentleman to the London docks would be advisable, so that he could see it for himself?

Mr. ROBERTS

I have been to the London docks.
