HC Deb 05 November 1919 vol 120 cc1467-8
8. Sir J. D. REES

asked the Secretary of State for India whether the Governor-General in Council it taking any and, if so, what action in respect of the Raipur-Vizagapatam railway and the Vizagapatam harbour schemes?

Mr. MONTAGU

The construction of a harbour at Vizagapatam by the Bengal-Nagpur Railway Company has been approved in principle and will be carried out when funds can be allocated to it. The first forty-eight miles of the Raipur-Vizagapatam Railway project (from Vizianagram to Parvatipuran) were completed and opened in 1909. The remainder of the project is in abeyance for the present owing to more urgent demands of the funds available for railway construction.

Sir J. D. REES

Does the right hon. Gentleman foresee any near date at which funds will be available for this harbour project?

Mr. MONTAGU

I should not like to name a date. It depends on the conflicting claims of other railway projects.
