35. Mr. DAVISONasked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that the firm of Edward Williams, engineer, Smethwick, have informed their employâs that from 5th November, 1919, the 25 per cent. bonus is to be discontinued; and, in view of the Government statement that war wages were to continue until 1920, whether his Department can take any action in the matter?
§ Sir R. HORNEThis matter has not been reported to me, and I am entirely unaware of the circumstances. With regard to the latter part of the question, I am not acquainted with the statement to which my hon. Friend refers.
Mr. DAVISONIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that this bonus is an output bonus and has been in operation for eighteen months, and does he consider that the contemplated action of the firm in abolishing the bonus is consistent with the national appeal for increased production, and will he have inquiries made in the matter and make representations to the firm to continue the payment of this bonus both in the interests of the men and the national interests?
§ Sir R. HORNEIt is perfectly obvious that I cannot give an answer as to what I can do until I know the circumstances. If my hon. Friend will convey the full statement of the case to me, then I shall see what I can do.
Mr. DAVISONHas not a copy of the notice which was posted to the men been sent to the Department of the right hon. Gentleman?
§ Sir R. HORNEI shall certainly make inquiries. Up to now I have heard nothing of it.
