HC Deb 05 November 1919 vol 120 c1469
11. Mr. LUNN

asked the Secretary Of State for India whether he is aware that about the middle of last September Sir Charles Anderson, General Officer Commanding, Southern Command, India, received a deputation of soldiers from the Military Accounts Department, Poona Division, in regard to various complaints, including delay in demobilisation, insufficiency of extra food in return for compulsory payment of 5 annas a day, and stoppage of pay for washing which Was never sent to the washing contractor; if so, what has been done, is being done, or will be clone to remove these grievances; and if the troops concerned will receive a refund of the amount wrongly deducted for washing?

Mr. MONTAGU

I am aware that complaints were made about delay in demobilisation. On this point I would refer the hon. Member to the answers given by the Financial Secretary to the War Office on the 28th October, to the hon. and gallant Member for Torquay and to the right hon. Member for South Molton. I have no official information about the other complaints but will inquire. From private information I understand that a deputation of the men in question was received by the Commander-in-Chief at Simla with satisfactory results to all concerned.
