HC Deb 05 November 1919 vol 120 cc1465-6
2. Major COLFOX

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he has yet received a full report of the circumstances attendant on the transfer of the 3rd Battalion Bedford Regiment from Burma to Lucknow on 27th May last; whether these troops were left waiting in ordinary third-class railway carriages at Calcutta for many hours in the full glare of the midday sun while they might have been properly accommodated during their wait in buildings near at hand; whether proper provision of ice and other ordinary comforts was made; who was responsible for this state of affairs; and what steps have been taken to punish those responsible and pre vent a recurrence of similar trouble?

Mr. MONTAGU

At my request the Government of India have issued orders for a Court of Inquiry to be assembled to investigate fully all the circumstances connected with the journey of the 3rd Garrison Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, from Burma to Lucknow at the end of May last. Until I receive a copy of the findings of the Court, I regret that I can give no further information.
