HC Deb 20 May 1919 vol 116 cc202-3
70. Mr. GILBERT

asked the Home Secretary if the Chief Commissioner of Police is requiring a new type and standard of motor omnibus for the Metropolitan area before he will licence same; and in what manner the new standard varies from the existing type licensed as to weight, build, passenger - carrying capacity, and other important features?

Sir H. GREENWOOD

In 1917 the Commissioner sent out circulars to manufacturers and others concerned with motor omnibuses urging the desirability of designing a lighter type of omnibus, or alternatively of improving the springing. The circulars did not suggest any variation as to existing dimensions or as to the number of passengers, but dwelt chiefly on an improvement in weight and springing and in the form of power transmission. I will send copies of these circulars to the hon. Member.

71. Mr. GILBERT

asked the Home Secretary if he will state the number of motor omnibuses licensed by the Chief Commissioner of Police for the Metropolitan area for the present year; and how many of such vehicles are in public use at the present time?

Sir H. GREENWOOD

The total number of motor omnibuses licensed to ply for hire in London during the year ended 30th April, 1919, was 2,602. With the exception of those temporarily disabled, all these are available for service.
