HC Deb 20 May 1919 vol 116 cc188-9
34. Mr. F. C. THOMSON

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that prejudice is being caused to the interests of education by the retention of schools for military purposes; and whether he can accelerate the release of such schools?

Captain GUEST

The release of educational premises is already being expedited as much as is possible, and the desirability of their early surrender has been frequently impressed upon the local military authorities, who have from the first been instructed to give priority to such establishments. My hon. Friend may take it for granted that where educational establishments (which are used as military hospitals) are being retained for the moment, the reason for the retention is, that in these hospitals there are being treated sick and wounded soldiers whose condition would not permit of their immediate removal without serious suffering, and even danger.

35. Mr. THOMSON

asked the Secretary of State for War whether, considering that dissatisfaction is being caused by the failure of the military authorities, after they had given up the use of school buildings for hospitals, to remove within a reasonable period the furniture and surplus equipment from the buildings which have been so used, and by their refusal on that account to give entry to the educational authorities, he will see that arrangements are made in such cases for the prompt removal or disposal of such equipment, as the delays which are at present taking place are causing prejudice to educational interests?

Captain GUEST

Instructions to this effect have been issued to all the commands.
