HC Deb 19 May 1919 vol 116 c18
30. Captain LOSEBY

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture if soldiers receiving agricultural training under the Government scheme for discharged officers and men are allowed to negotiate with the farmer who is training them in regard to the payment for board and lodging, or are they compelled, regardless of the value of their labour, to always pay a flat rate of 30s. a week?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of AGRICULTURE (Sir Arthur Boscawen)

There is nothing in the Board's scheme to prevent the holder of a training scholarship from obtaining board and lodging for less than 30s. a week if he can find a farmer, approved by the county committee, who will take less.

97. Sir F. YOUNG

asked the Secretary of State for War whether, in dealing with soldier labour on the land, the Government is prepared to demobilise those who are actually living in their own homes and working on farms on which they previously worked, or at least provide that they shall be included in the percentage not to be withdrawn from farm work?

Captain GUEST (Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury)

It is not intended to demobilise the men selected for retention on the land. The selection of men for retention has been left to Agricultural Executive Committees.
