HC Deb 15 May 1919 vol 115 c1751
38. Mr. BRIANT

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that the present railway fares are acting adversely in the interests of the thousands of demobilised soldiers who are desirous of playing cricket, football, and other outdoor pastimes; is he aware that the former rates of a single fare and a quarter for the return journey to athletic grounds are no longer available and that therefore a fare which, prior to August, 1914, was 1s. 3d. return now costs 3s.; and if, considering the importance of encouraging outdoor sport in the interests of the physical welfare of players, he will arrange for a reduction of the rates at present charged?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I regret that, in view of the present position of the railways, the concession suggested by the hon. Gentleman could not be given.
