HC Deb 15 May 1919 vol 115 cc1751-2
39. Mr. STANTON

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will request the Taff Vale Railway Company to erect some suitable shelters at the Pontycynon, Abercwmboi, and Matthewstown halts upon their Aberdare branch, so that men, women, and children may find some shelter from the rain and bad weather; is he aware that illness and even deaths have been caused by the company's neglect of such convenience to the travelling public; and if his Department will at once take steps to protect the public health in this matter?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I understand that shelters are already provided at the first two halts named in the question. As regards Matthewstown, I am making inquiries respecting the erection of some simple type of shelter, and I will let the hon. Gentleman know the result.

Mr. STANTON

Will the hon. Gentleman accept it from me, knowing the district, that there are no shelters at all there proportionate to what I am asking for and that the workers, their wives and families have to suffer in consequence. The company is doing well and can afford to place shelters there for the safety and health of the people. Will the hon. Gentleman see that they make some attempt to serve the public interest as well as their own?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I understand the hon. Member to say the shelters there are not suitable?

Mr. STANTON

No.

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I will certainly inquire further of the company.
