§ 66. Major BIRCHALLasked the President of the Board of Trade whether it is the practice of the railway companies, acting under the orders of the Railway Executive, to deduct the sum of 1s. for expenses in all cases of refunds; and whether, seeing that such a charge constitutes a hardship in the case of those making short journeys where perhaps the total fare does not exceed a few shillings, he will take steps to mitigate it?
§ Mr. BRIDGEMANI understand from the Railway Executive Committee that the charge referred to is made in view of the considerable expense to which the railway companies are put in connection with the refund of fares, and is not regarded by them as an excessive charge for the trouble entailed.
