HC Deb 27 March 1919 vol 114 cc579-80
25. Captain LOSEBY

asked the President of the Board of Education if he will consider the advisability of appointing a director of physical training to supervise the whole system of physical training of children, more particularly of children attending national schools, throughout the country?

Mr. FISHER

The Board for many years past have had on their staff expert inspectors of physical training who work under the chief medical officer. Their inspections are made in all types of schools which receive grants from the Board. I do not think the establishment of such a post as is suggested is required.

Colonel YATE

Is it not the case that there are only five inspectors, of whom five are women, and that there are no proper inspectors for boys in physical training?

Mr. FISHER

I will not charge my memory with the actual number of inspectors, but we have a number of organisers of physical training whose duty it is to give instruction to the teachers in the methods of physical training.
