§ 93. Mr. MALLALIEUasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether it is proposed to continue the National War Savings Committee in its present or some 2100 modified form; if so, what paid organising, and inspecting staff has been or is to be appointed to supervise the work in the provinces; and whether it is intended to continue the local committees, including the committees for counties and county boroughs?
§ Mr. BALDWINIt is proposed to continue the national war savings organisation with some slight alterations in membership of the committee in order to strengthen the connection between the committee and its local branches. The original county committees have been disbanded as the whole country is now covered with local war savings committees. Detailed questions of local organisation are being discussed at a series of conferences of local war savings committees held throughout the country. A few of the officers whose services were lent by the Board of Education for the supervision of the work in the provinces have been permanently transferred to the staff of the National War Savings Committee, and will continue to act as an inspecting staff.
§ Colonel WEDGWOODCan the hon. Gentleman tell the House what is the cost to the nation of the National War Savings work?
§ Mr. BALDWINI know it is very little, but I cannot tell my hon. Friend the amount from memory.
§ Brigadier-General CROFTIs it not very much cheaper than newspaper propaganda?
§ Mr. BALDWINYes.
