HC Deb 19 March 1919 vol 113 c2094
79. Mr. F. ROBERTS

asked the President of the Board of Trade when the 50 per cent. increase on fares and other restrictions on railway travelling will be removed and all privileges restored to the people?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

As I have explained in previous replies on this subject, the whole question of the removal or modification of restrictions on railway travelling is receiving constant consideration, but in view of the present position of the railways I can hold out no hope of an early withdrawal of the 50 per cent. increase on fares.

Mr. ROBERTS

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that the President of the Board of Trade is reported to have said the time is rapidly coming when these concessions would be made? If so, can he give us any interpretation of that?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I am informed by my right Hon. Friend that he gave no indication either of the time or the amount of the reduction he hoped to see made.
