HC Deb 06 March 1919 vol 113 c586
8. Mr. R. GWYNNE

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department whether the French Government have lately been large buyers of green tea in Shanghai through an American firm; and, if so, whether either English or French houses were approached by the French Government before this contract was given to an American firm?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND (Department Of Overseas Trade)

I have received no official report on this matter, but I am informed unofficially that an order for a large quantity of green tea has been placed by the French Government with an American firm, and a large portion of the tea has already been given. So far as I am aware, the London market was not approached by the French Government, but I cannot say whether or not that Government has approached any of its own nationals for quotations.

Mr. GWYNNE

Can the hon. Gentleman kindly give me an assurance that endeavours will be made to retain that important trade?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I will do everything I can in the case of such offers being forthcoming in the future. It is one of the duties which the Commercial Attachés are asked to bear in mind.
