HC Deb 06 March 1919 vol 113 c614
78. Major KELLEY

asked the Food Controller whether, in view of the serious outbreak of influenza, he will accelerate the release of spirits from bond; and will he consider if the present controlled price of whisky can be reduced at least to the poorer classes who present medical certificates for same?

Mr. McCURDY

As regards the first part of the question, I am unable to add anything to the answers already given on this subject. As regards the latter part, I regret that any reduction in price is impossible for the present.

Mr. G. LAMBERT

Can my hon. Friend say what steps are to be taken by the poorer classes, when they have a medical certificate compelling them for the purpose of their disease to use whisky or other stimulants, to get it?

Mr. McCURDY

The War Cabinet have recently sanctioned an increase in the release of spirits from bond, which they are advised will prove sufficient to meet the reasonable requirements of the public. If my hon. Friend has any information to lay before us to show that that anticipation is not being realised, I have no doubt the matter will be promptly reconsidered.
