HC Deb 03 March 1919 vol 113 cc39-40
91. Captain TUDOR REES

asked the Secretary of State for War whether, in computing an officer's gratuity, that officer's service in the ranks prior to his being commissioned is taken into account; and, if so, what is the rate of allowance for such service?

Mr. CHURCHILL

Service in the ranks does not count for the officer's gratuity, but it carries a man's gratuity under the rules applicable to soldiers.

100. Mr. LORT-WILLIAMS

asked the Secretary for War whether he is aware that men are entitled already to the service gratuity under the King's Regulations; and whether, therefore, he will advise that the war gratuity shall be paid free of any deduction on account of the service gratuity?

Mr. CHURCHILL

This is fully understood. The war gratuity is paid under the conditions laid down by the Royal Warrant of December last in lieu of the service gratuity granted by the Royal Warrant of October, 1914.
