§ 73. Major LANE-FOXasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agri- 897 culture on what grounds it has been decided to defer payment of compensation due for losses incurred in 1918 through grass land being ploughed up by order of the authorities till after this year's harvest?
Sir A. BOSCAWENThe Board have come to no such decision as is suggested by ray hon. Friend. In certain cases where there is evidence that loss incurred on the cultivation in 1918 may be expected to be wholly or partly recouped in 1919, it has been suggested to the claimant that he should allow his claim to stand over, but he is under no obligation to do so.
§ Major LANE-FOXIs it not a fact that in some cases compensation has been distinctly refused?
Sir A. BOSCAWENI am not aware of that, but if my hon. and gallant Friend will give me any information of a particular case I will look into it.
§ Colonel MEYSEY-THOMPSONIs the Government prepared to pay full compensation for loss incurred by the fanner in seed and labour, and also loss of profit?
Sir A. BOSCAWENAs my hon. and gallant Friend knows, under the arrangements that were made, the Government pay any real loss incurred by ploughing up, if there has been a loss? The whole matter is settled by arbitration.
