HC Deb 21 July 1919 vol 118 cc893-4
63. Major Sir B. FALLE

asked the Prime Minister if he is aware that people over the age of seventy who are supported by their relatives and live with them are not permitted to draw the old age pension, on the ground that such lodging and support is the equivalent of 13s. 6d. per week and in excess of the income of an old age pensioner; and if he will inquire into this matter with a view to amending such a rule (if any), which is an incentive to the neglect of parents and relatives?

Mr. BALDWIN (Joint Financial Secretary to the Treasury)

The hon. Member is under a misapprehension as to the position. The enjoyment of free maintenance from relatives does not prevent the recipient from obtaining an old age pension unless the maintenance (with the other means, if any) is of such value as to exceed the statutory limit for a pension.
