HC Deb 14 April 1919 vol 114 cc2475-6
Colonel WEDGWOOD

(by Private Notice) asked the Secretary of State for India whether he has any further information to give to the House as to the rioting in India in connection with the Rowlatt Bills?

Mr. MONTAGU

I regret to say that there has been further riots, slight riots, at Lahore and at Allahabad where the city telegraph office has been burned and at Amritsar where the telegraph office and other buildings have been destroyed, and there has been some loss of life, including Europeans. I propose to publish the contents of the telegrams that I have received this evening.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Is all this rioting the result of the passing of the Rowlatt Bills into law, and will the right hon. Gentleman give the House an opportunity of discussing these measures at an early date?

Mr. MONTAGU

I do not think that it would be safe in the present disturbed condition of the world to attribute these riots to any one cause.
