HC Deb 14 April 1919 vol 114 c2475
18. Colonel YATE

asked the Secretary of State for India whether, despite the considerable improvement in the general scales of pay in the lower ranks of the Indian police during recent years, the pay of an Indian constable is only Rs. 8 per mensem; and, if so, whether he will now consider the question of a further increase of pay to the lower Indian ranks as well as to the European inspectors and sergeants?

Mr. MONTAGU

I am not aware that the rate of Rs. 8 a month as the minimum pay of an Indian police constable still continues in any province, except possibly in a few districts of Bihar and Orissa. In all provinces the pay and allowances of the provincial police, including inspectors and sergeants, has been improved in recent years.
